Cold Plunge — A Considered Guide
Cold water immersion has moved from elite athletics into mainstream wellness, and for good reason: the physiological response to sustained cold exposure — elevated noradrenaline, reduced inflammation, improved mood and recovery — is well documented. What has also changed is the hardware. The early generation of cold plunge tubs required ice, constant attention and significant effort. The current generation of chiller-equipped systems maintains a precise set temperature automatically, needs no ice, and integrates with a sauna circuit as naturally as a shower follows a swim.
The cold plunge systems we list are chiller-equipped and built for outdoor residential use. These are not portable ice baths or inflatable tubs. They are engineered products intended for year-round outdoor installation, with insulated shells, internal filtration, and temperature control accurate to within one degree.
The pairing of a sauna and a cold plunge — contrast therapy — is the context in which both perform best. We present them as a circuit rather than as separate purchases, and the bundle pages set out how the two work together and what the combined installation requires.
How to Choose Your Cold Plunge System
Temperature range — Most chiller systems operate between 4°C and 15°C. If you are new to cold immersion, starting at 15°C and moving toward 10°C over several weeks is a sensible protocol. Systems with precise digital control make this progression easy to manage.
Capacity — A single-person plunge tub requires approximately 500–800 litres of water. Two-person systems are available but the thermal load on the chiller unit increases significantly, which affects energy cost and cool-down time after use.
Filtration — Ozone and UV filtration maintain water quality without heavy chemical dosing. Premium systems include both. Without filtration, the water requires changing weekly.
Delivery and Installation
Cold plunge systems ship by pallet freight to your delivery address. We confirm the delivery date, access route and any crane or ground clearance requirements with you by telephone before dispatch. Installation requires a level outdoor surface, a standard power connection, and a cold-water supply for filling. No specialist plumber is required for the water supply connection.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I stay in? Most protocols recommend 2–4 minutes at temperatures below 10°C. Duration matters less than consistency — daily short exposures outperform occasional longer ones.
How much does it cost to run? A well-insulated chiller system maintaining 10°C in a Northern European climate draws 300–500W on average. Monthly running costs are comparable to a fridge-freezer.
How often does the water need changing? With UV and ozone filtration, water quality can be maintained for several months before a full change is required. Without filtration, weekly changes are advisable.
Can I use it indoors? Yes, with adequate drainage and ventilation. Most customers use theirs outdoors, paired with a sauna.
Is it suitable for medical conditions? Cold immersion should be avoided by anyone with a cardiovascular condition, Raynaud's disease, or cold urticaria without first consulting a physician.
